“Copies” of Pyramid Texts: examining the differences

This article investigates possibilities of approaching mechanisms of transmission of sacred literature in Ancient Egypt through concepts of copying and regulated variation. On the example of four utterances from the Pyramid Texts and their “copies” from later periods, the author shows how the structure and substance of a sacred text can vary depending on the evolution of theological thought and ritual decontextualization.Downloads
